Chapter Eight: Prism Break

Her screams brought everyone running. Friends and foes appeared, but Zaria didn’t care. She shook from head-to-toe like a leaf.

“Did you see it?” she cried desperately. She grabbed Filip’s shirt and shook him. “Did you see it?”

He shook his head, blond hair falling into his face, and she let him go. Spinning around she tried to find it and spotted the thing behind the crowd. The creature wore her clothes, copied her hair style, and stared back at her with yellow eyes, streaked with purple. The only thing different was its golden footwear. It winked and slipped back into the prismatic surface of an imposing building.

She pointed at it. “There, it was right there!”

A few in the crowd looked over their shoulders to where she pointed. There was nothing to see. The trollish specter was gone. Filip touched her arm and shook his head again. Zaria slumped in defeat. She wiped her nose and rubbed her eyes. Clearly the lack of good sleep was getting to her.

“This one is a raving lunatic, Lukas,” a cold female said, turning back to face them.

Zaria stared mutinously at the woman until the fairy raised one supercilious brow in derision. She sniffed and stared down her pointy nose in a superior manner.

The female said frostily, “She’ll come to nothing good.”

“Now, now, Nori,” Lukas taunted softly from her right. “She might be handier to have around than we know. The girl said she wished on the Lost Well.”

“Did she?” Nori sniffed again, which irritated Zaria. She wanted to tell the gorgeous fairy to blow her nose.

“These humans will serve our father well. I am certain of it. Besides it has been many years since any son of man was so foolish as to cross into our realm.”

Nori shook back a waterfall of red curls. “Very well,” she said haughtily. “By all means present the runts to Grimkell. It’ll be your funeral.”

“Jealous, sister?” Lukas asked, delighted with Nori’s petulance.

As Zaria predicted, Nori sniffed. The fairy inspected her cuticles and said, “Of course not.”

The condescension in those words was so thick one could choke on it. Nori probably hoped her brother would. Lukas chucked Nori under her chin and gave her a biting smile.

“Or perhaps,” he said, softly sneering. “They will be just the edge I need to eclipse you in Grimkell’s favor.”

“You could bring him a hundred children of man, and he still would prefer me to you.”

“So confident are you? How many times have you failed him recently?”

Nori’s face sharpened in distaste. “Take your runts and get out of my hair.”

“Runts,” Lukas said insouciantly, waving an imperious hand. “Follow, and do keep together. Wandering off will lead to certain death and other unpleasantness.”

Zaria gulped and stuffed her hands under her arms. She felt small. She glanced anxiously at the passing buildings, looking for her tormentor. The only comfort in all of this was her friends. They bracketed her on either side, offering her protection. Filip tried to catch her eye, but she looked away, glancing down at her shoes, uncertain and confused.
